Chief Secretary Alok Kumar Jain has directed the Technical Committee headed by Geological Survey of India (GSI) to monitor changes taking place in Varunvat Parvat for coming three years after the treatment.
Chief Secretary, in a review meeting of Varunavat Treatment work at Secretariat on Tuesday directed the Committee to start the monitoring work at the earliest. He maintained that though no incident of landslide has occurred in past three years it was still necessary to watch the changes taking place in the Varunavat for the safety of the people of Uttarkashi and their properties.
The Central Government had sanctioned Rs. 9.50 crore for construction of Concrete Lining at Tambakhani, Ramlila and Masjid Mohalla after the treatment. The undertaking agency has forwarded revised cost of Rs. 10.66 crore. Chief Secretary instructed the concerned officers to table the amended proposal in front of Steering Committee and the Task Force.
Responding to the information furnished by District Magistrate Uttarkashi Dr. R Rajesh Kumar regarding tendency of landslides at Mainagad, the Chief Secretary asked the officers to refer the case to Technical Committee. He said that appropriate measures of safety would be taken after receiving report and suggestions from the Committee.
It may be noted that 800 metres level landslide had taken place at Varunavat Parvat in 2003 that had affected 1.5 km areas. The landslide continued for three months. The treatment was undertaken in seven phases after which the situation is stable.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Revenue Om Prakash, Secretary Irrigation NS Negi, Additional Secretary PWD Amit Negi, officers and experts of GSI and Survey of India.
