PM chairs meeting of National Committee on celebrating Motilal Nehruji's 150th birth anniversary

The Government has decided to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Pandit Motilal Nehru this year. A National Committee has been constituted on under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister to celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner. 

The Prime Minister chaired the first meeting of the National Committee today. The meeting was attended by Smt Sonia Gandhi, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Shri A.K. Antony, Kumari Selja, Shri Salman Khurshid, Shri Kapil Sibal, Smt Ambika Soni, and Dr. Karan Singh. The committee comprises of a number of eminent persons form public life and other members who attended the meeting were Shri Janardan Dwivedi, Kunwar Rewti Raman Singh, Shri Manoj Kukar Singh, Shri Basudev Chatterji, Prof. Mushirul Hasan, Shri Peter D’Souza, Shri Suman Dubey, Prof. A.K. Singh, Ch. Jitendra Nath Singh, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Prof Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, Prof S.R. Mehrotra and Ms Neera Chandok. 

The National Committee deliberated upon the commemorative activities events to be conducted during the commemoration. Members suggested paying tribute to the memory of Pandit Motilal Nehru by organizing seminars and conferences, popularizing his contribution to Indian polity through a new biography, new books and publications, establishing chairs in his name in educational institutions, release of commemorative coins and stamps and by launching of a website dedicated to the history of India’s freedom struggle. It was suggested that the liberal ideology and politics of Pandit Motilal Nehru should be made relevant to today’s generation and the fact that he laid the foundation of our constitution should receive adequate appreciation. 

Prime Minister welcomed the suggestions and directed that a National Implementation Committee be set up to consider all of them and chalk out programmes and activities to be undertaken during the commemorative period. This Committee shall also draw up the financial proposals, obtain requisite approvals and monitor implementation of various events to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Pandit Motilal Nehru.
