As on 12.12.2011, 12,327.27527 acres of defence land is under encroachment which includes the illegal possession of the civilians. Since market value cannot be precisely defined numerically it is not possible to maintain data in this regard.
Action for removal of encroachment is taken under the provisions of Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971 as well as under the Cantonments Act, 2006. Detailed instructions emphasizing the need for ensuring vigilance, detection and prevention of new encroachments have been issued by the Ministry. Strict disciplinary and administrative action is taken against officials found guilty and in some cases CBI has been entrusted to investigate the matter.
