National Consultation Workshop on National Service Scheme

Minister of State (Independent Charge), Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Jitendra Singh here today chaired a National Consultation Workshop on National Service Scheme (NSS). 

The Workshop was organised to deliberate upon the recommendations emerging from an independent evaluation study of NSS undertaken by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

 In the Workshop, all the stakeholders connected with NSS, including officials from Central/ State Governments, Autonomous Bodies, officials from Academic Institutions as also some eminent persons in the field, were invited. 

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has made wide-ranging recommendations, inter-alia, for expanding the coverage of NSS, for improving the impact and sustainability of activities taken up under NSS, for streamlining the administrative and financing mechanism under the Programme, for capacity building of NSS stakeholders and for making the Programme more attractive for them. 

The Minister interacted with the participants and after deliberations, directed that a Core Group be constituted immediately to finalise a precise Action Plan, with specific time-lines, for implementation of the recommendations of the TISS Study Report.

 In particular, he emphasised that an effective mechanism should be developed for supervision, monitoring and evaluation of NSS activities (including development of activity mapping and benchmarking tools).

 Shri Singh also stated that a National Level Advisory Body would be set up for NSS, comprising of all concerned Government and Non-Government stakeholders, in order to advise the Ministry on strengthening of NSS on continuing basis.
